Winter break is already here! Final Exams are underway here on campus and students will begin their transition back home for winter break in the next few days.
For some students, this might be their first time coming back home for an extended time. Your student has been operating on their own schedule for the past few months and created routines for chores, meals and laundry. It might be important to have a conversation with them about your expectations while they are home over winter break. Will a curfew still be enforced? Are there specific family events you expect them to attend? How do you expect them to contribute to household chores? Talking about some of these things up front can be a great way to reconnect and avoid conflicts later on.
Although the semester is coming to a close, please remember, students and family members still have access to all the wonderful resources UTC has to offer over winter break. Whether you and your student need to reach out to the Counseling Center, University Health Services, the Center for Career and Leadership Development, or more, we are ready to help!
As a note, the University will be closed on Saturday, December 24th through Monday, January 2nd. This will be a great time for staff to recharge and get ready for a wonderful Spring semester. If you are in need of emergency assistance during this time, please contact UTC PD at 423-425-4357.
As always, reach out with your questions! We're happy to help! Contact us at utcparents@utc.edu or 423-425-2321.
Best,
Hannah Turcotte
Assistant Director for Student and Family Engagement

Leadership Coaching is a process between invested individuals who have the intent of progressing towards a desired future. We invite your student to explore one of our many tailored coaching options to identify personal skills that future internship hosts and employers are looking for, to identify way to further exemplify top leadership practices, to encourage calculated risk, and to see how to apply strengths-based leadership to any organizational challenges, career, habits, or relationships. Regardless of their academic major or year in school, this service is applicable to your student.
In two 60-minute sessions, your students can expect to take a research-based instrument or survey; to receive their results; and to develop a tailored plan of next steps based on the results. To learn more about these opportunities or to schedule, visit our website or email the Director of Leadership Development and Programs, Daniel Grzesik, at Daniel-Grzesik@utc.edu.

Student Government Association Leads Campus Safety Walk
Students with the UTC SGA led a group of about 35 people on a roughly three-mile walk around campus during the first of two “Safety Walk” events on November 22. Members of University administration were joined by campus and city safety officials on a route developed by SGA members to highlight concerns within three primary areas: sidewalk surfaces, pedestrian safety at traffic intersections and handicapped-accessible building entrances and sidewalk ramps.
- Upon returning to the University Center where the trek began, SGA and UTC leaders discussed the issues identified. The group agreed that, in addition to sidewalks, pedestrian safety and accessible buildings, outdoor campus emergency call boxes must be more visible and accessible.
- Throughout the walk, UTC Associate Dean of Students Brett Fuchs compiled a list of potential problems, a task he repeated at the day’s second outing that started at 8 p.m. Fuchs will develop a “master list” of findings from both walks for University officials to consider.
