Can you believe it is already mid-terms?

This semester is flying by! Students are already beginning to prepare for mid-term exams, papers and projects! Before we know it, it will be time to prepare for finals!

For our first-year students, this time can come with heightened levels of stress and anxiety as they take their first college level mid-term exam. In the coming weeks your student may need a little more encouragement than normal. If you find your student needs to be connected to any of the academic  or mental health resources on campus, reach out to us! We would be more than happy to make that connection for you and your family.

We are looking forward to seeing  many of you on campus in the next few weeks for Fall Family Weekend. Due to the number of registrations we have received, we are nearing capacity for many of our events. Capacity is defined by space and/or resource limitations as we work to create the best possible experience for our attending families. As such, we will be closing registration for these events early. Registration for the Kick Off, Tailgate, Night with OMA, Movie, and Brunch will be closing on Friday, October 7th at 12 PM. Tickets to the football game and Fall Family Weekend T-shirts* will still be available through the registration form. For more information about Fall Family Weekend, please visit utc.edu/ffw.

As always, reach out with your questions! We're happy to help! Contact us at utcparents@utc.edu or 423-425-2321.

Best,
Hannah

Updates from the Bursar's Office
Greetings from Janice Cosey, Bursar

The September Newsletter stated we were almost ¾ through 2022, well it is now October.  Wow!  The Bursar Office Team is available to assist in the educational journey of your student!  As we continue to move ahead always protect yourself, your family and those around you while being safe.

Spring 2023 will start in a little over three months.  In preparation, students are encouraged to set up ACH/Direct Deposit for refunds through the student’s MyMocsNet account.  Paper checks are mailed to the permanent address on file, it can take 5-10+ days via USPS.  The Office of the Bursar is still an advocate of ACH/Direct Deposit because it is a vital step to ensure the funds expected can be delivered as quickly and securely as possible.  If assistance is needed on adding the refund account information, please go to www.utc.edu/bursar, click the “Video Instructions” tab in the middle of the page and click on the video titled “Bursar Series: Direct Deposit.

If the Tuition Installment Payment Plan (TIPP) was utilized for the Fall Semester, the remaining payments are due on October 1st and November 1st.   A $50.00 late fee is assessed if payment is not received by the designated due date.

If you have any general questions, please contact our office at 423.425.4781 or email us at Bursars-Office@utc.edu.  The office is open Monday – Friday beginning at 8:30 am until 5:00 pm.

Note: MyMocsPass Passphrase or FERPA Pin is required to receive specific information about a student’s account.

Arkai Duo
October 24th, 7:30 PM, Roland Hayes Concert Hall

An upcoming visit from a pair of Juilliard Conservatory-trained string musicians should have a broad appeal across the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus—both among students and the community.

ARKAI, an award-winning string duo comprised of violinist Jonathan Miron and cellist Philip Sheegog, will perform at the UTC Fine Arts Center (752 Vine St., corner of Vine and Palmetto) on Monday, Oct. 24.

The free concert, open to the public, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center’s Roland Hayes Concert Hall.

ARKAI, winners of the 2021 Astral Artists National Auditions, has been described as a duo that pushes the limits of musical genre by combining classical brilliance with rock band energy, jazz combo spontaneity and string quartet elegance. Past engagements have included performances at The Metropolitan Opera, Joe’s Pub, Rockwood Music Hall, Juilliard School, Chateau Marmont, Curtis Institute, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and the 92nd Street Y.

“Letters from COVID,” the duo’s electronic debut composition, was performed for a global audience of over 30,000 people from 182 countries at TED@PMI.

ARKAI was selected by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs and the Association of American Voices to participate in the 2021-2022 American Music Abroad season. Through this program, ARKAI engaged in exchange programs with underserved audiences around the world with little or no access to American music, demonstrating the power of cultural diplomacy as a tool to bring people together.

ARKAI is currently creating its debut album, Aurora, in collaboration with seven-time Grammy Award-nominated producer Joel Hamilton.

Supporting Physical Fitness and Wellbeing at UTC
Char Schmidt, PhD, Associate Tenured Professor, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
and
Karissa Peyer, PhD, Associate Professor

With more than a month of classes already under their belts, your Mocs are now settling into new routines and habits at UTC. How much physical activity does that routine include? The United States Physical Activity Guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity or some equivalent combination of moderate and vigorous aerobic physical activity per week.  In addition, the guidelines recommend at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities per week (Piercy et al., 2018). While 18–29-year-olds are generally the most active age group, more than 1 in 5 young adults does not meet the aerobic activity recommendation (Du et al., 2019).

The good news is that UTC has many programs and opportunities available to help your college student get or stay active. In group fitness classes at the Aquatic and Recreation Center (the ARC), your student can try out yoga, Zumba and even line dancing. They can sign up for Intramurals such as flag football, sand volleyball and spike ball or join a club sports team like soccer, ultimate frisbee, wakeboarding or angling! Solo-exercising more their thing? The ARC is open from 6am to 10pm most days and has weights, a walking track, and even a swimming pool. More of an outdoors person? UTC Outdoors provides rental equipment such as mountain bikes and paddle boards and is leading more than 20 outdoor adventure trips this semester.

October is Exercise is Medicine – On Campus month here at UTC! Regular participation in physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of not only heart disease, blood pressure, and diabetes mellitus, but also anxiety, depression, and severe COVID-19 (Piercy eta l., 2018; Sallis et al., 2021). Check out the schedule of events - such as Sunset Yoga, Field Day, and Mocs and Mutts - happening all month long to make it easier and more fun to be active on campus. Is your Moc moving?

MOC Forward Week will be held October 10-17, and this year’s theme is “Embracing and Engaging Our Diverse Community.” Students should check out the list of events (some of which require pre-registration) and learn more about Moc Forward Week by visiting the link below.
